Every man, woman and child spends at least a little bit of time dreaming about getting away.  They dream of a simpler life.  They dream of the little town that isn’t anywhere near the hustle and bustle of the city.  Powell River is one of those places.  Located about one hundred and thirty five miles north of Vancouver, Canada, Powell River is the perfect location.  The residents of Powell River love where they live and they like to boast that it’s the perfect place to start a family and it’s a great place to retire.  You can reach a bunch of great destinations all located within a few hours of driving.  It doesn’t matter if you want to live on the coast or up on a mountain, Powell River has both!

LOCAL INFORMATION

Doctor Israel Wood Powell “discovered” Powell River in 1881 and declared that Powell River was the second shortest river in the world.  Even though it was named the second shortest river in the world, it quickly became Western Canada’s leading lumber producer.   It’s also the home of the first pulp and paper mill in the western parts of Canada and at the time was the biggest pulp and paper mill in the world.

The first settlement on Powell River is now called “Townsite.”  Townsite has officially been declared a National Historic District.  Powell River as a whole has four major communities—Westview, Heritage Townsite, Cranberry Lake and Wildwood.  The major areas of Powell River make up what is known as the Corporation of the District of Powell River.  On a map you’ll find Powell River on the mainland of British Columbia, across from Courtenay of Vancouver Island.

The population of Powell River is thirteen thousand, but the surrounding areas raise the population to twenty two thousand.   The area’s major industries are tourism, forestry, mining and fishing.  Arts, culture, health care, education and mariculture are also important and contribute to the local economy.

People say that Powell River is a great place to live and is a known popular tourism spot.

The areas of Powell River include Westview, Cranberry Lake, Wildwood, Heritage, Townsite, (these make up the Corporation of the District of Powell river that was mentioned previously).  Saltery Bay, Myrtle Point, Lang Bay, Lund, Okeover Arm, Sliammon and the two islands of Texada and Savary are all located outside the major Powell River area.  Many of these places are also very popular tourist destinations and while together they make up the Powell Lake region of British Columbia, each area is a self contained entity and would make a great place to go on vacation or even to buy a new home!

Powell River has been marketed as a great place for people to start out in life and to retire.  Price wise, the Powell River area is comparable to the general Vancouver region of British Columbia, if not more affordable.  You can get a larger home in Powell River than you can get in the more urban areas of the province.

Powell River is a region known for being scenic and rural.  Located on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada people often go there to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life and this has resulted in a close knit, small community that can offer everything from a mountain hike, a day at the lake or even a trip to an Opera House (if you don’t mind driving for an hour or so).  Wildlife and outdoorsy activites abound here and the way of life is considerably slower and more appreciative than what you’d find in a city.  It doesn’t matter what you like to do, you’ll find a place for it in the Powell River area.
